Can I maintain my website on my own?

Absolutely. The webhosts that are compatible with my designs all have a built-in Content Management System (CMS) which allows you to edit your information pages and add categories and products without having to know any coding whatsoever. These hosts are all very user-friendly and have great customer service which will help you out with any technical difficulties you may come across.

How many pages/products/categories are included in my website purchase?

As many as you want! The webhosts that are compatible with my website templates all offer unlimited pages/categories/products.

Can you add a no right click script to my website so people can't steal my photos?

Well, I can, but I don't recommend it, because it doesn't work. A no right click script just disables your viewers from right clicking which may cause navigation problems for your viewers. When a viewer goes to your website, all your site graphics and photos are stored in the viewer's Temporary Internet Files folder on their computer, so they already have them anyway. Plus a taking a screenshot or viewing the source code of your site will also give the viewer access to your images.
What I recommend doing is using a faint watermark over your photos, and you can create something like that in a program like Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop. Or there are some online services that can do it for you. People will still be able to take your photos, but they probably won't want to if it has a copyright notice right on the photo itself.

Do you add the products, photos, and information to my site?

No, not as a general rule. Product listings and photo uploading are not included in your purchase. The webhosts that I work with make it easy for you to add your own photos and product listings to your site. However, if you don't want to do it yourself, we can add your listings and photos for a fee. Click here for our pricelist.

Can I add music to my website?

Well, yes, you CAN, but it is more a question of whether or not you SHOULD. I personally do not recommend it.
There are problems associated with having music on your website unless you are using a site that is entirely a flash website or a site that uses frames. I don't do either of those (neither is really recommended if you are concerned with having good placement on search engines), so the main problem is that the song will start over every time someone clicks on a link on your website. Some argue that having music on your website adds an emotional element and a specific ambiance. However, most website visitors have reported finding music on websites annoying. Check out this link that may be of interest in helping you understand why music on websites is not recommended. http://www.hoteltravelcheck.com/tutorials/website-music-services.html

Do you do flash animation for websites?

I don't build complete flash websites. Minor to moderate animation I can do, but extensively elaborate flash animation is not something that I do at this time. It's very time consuming and the cost would be more than I feel comfortable passing along to my customers.

What do I need to do after I purchase a website design?

After you purchase a website design from Lavender Moon Design, you will need to forward me the FTP and storeadmin login information for your website that is hosted with one of my compatible webhosts. The easiest way to do this is to forward the registration email that you receive from either host after you sign up for hosting. You should receive it within 24-72 hours after signing up for hosting. It is a fairly long email with several usernames and passwords, and generally starts with something like "Please Print for your Records." Once I receive that information, I will generally get your website installed within about 24 hours.

How long does it take to install my website design?

The answer to this depends on you as a buyer. Once you purchase a website design from Lavender Moon Design, I will need you to forward me login information for your website. I need the FTP login info as well as your storeadmin login info. As soon as I get that information, I can get your design installed in less than 24 hours usually. If you do not currently have webhosting with one of the hosts that I work with you will have to sign up before I can install your design. Once you sign up for hosting, it usually takes between 24-72 hours to get your registration email that contains the login information for your site that is mentioned above.

Can you include graphics from a digital scrapbooking site in my design?

Well, that depends. Some graphics from digital scrapbooking sites are available for commercial use. Most times you will need to purchase a commercial license for your intended use, and a credit link to the designer will be required on your site. However, not all digital scrapbooking graphics are allowed to be used on a commercial site. Research the terms of use, as almost each designer has their own, and if you have any questions about it, contact the designer. I will need to have proof of permission from the designer to use a digital scrapbooking graphic in your design.

Why doesn't my site have a higher search engine ranking?

This question has several answers.
First, your site isn't going to show up right away on search engines. You will have to give it at least a month for your site to appear on any search engine, generally.
Second, the ranking you get in the search engines depends on the quality of information on your website. Descriptive text is a MUST. That doesn't mean you have to cover your site with text that most of your viewers will find annoying and won't read anyway, but you must have descriptive text with keywords that people may search for your site with.
Another thing that helps is having links to your website on other websites, so exchanging links with other websites is a great idea!
Social networking is HUGE right now. Get a blog with a link back to your website, visit other blogs and comment on them, get a Twitter account, get a Facebook fan page, join a professional community like LinkedIn....all of these will help bring attention to your website and grow your business.
Meta title, description, and keywords are also a good idea (however, not as important as they used to be) to add to your products and pages when you're editing your site, and there are boxes for you to add this information when you create a page or add a product.
Now there are several companies out there that offer SEO (search engine optimization). BEWARE as most of these are not necessarily scams, but targeted towards people that don't know much about websites and will willing charge you unnecessarily. With the hosts that I work with you can easily optimize your site yourself with descriptive text and meta tags.

If I purchase one of your designs do I have to use one of your compatible hosts?

Nope, it's perfectly acceptable for you to have hosting elsewhere. However, I only offer installation of your design to a website hosted with one of our compatible hosts. Installation and support is NOT provided by Lavender Moon Design if you host your site elsewhere. Your web host should be able to assist you in the installation of the design, however.

My website looks funny on Internet Explorer 6, what's up?

Internet Explorer 6 is probably the buggiest, most tempermental, and problematic internet browser out there. I highly recommend not using it. People seem to be getting it, because since early 2009 the number of users still implementing this outdated browser has drastically dropped. In fact, Google itself is urging people to quit using it.
If you're stuck on IE, update the darn thing, but better yet, switch to Firefox. Faster, safer, and you can personalise it. Other browsers are Safari, Opera and Google's Chrome. They're all free, so what are you waiting for?
All my website designs are tested on the newer browsers, Firefox, Internet Explorer 7 and 8, Safari, Chrome, and Opera. That being said, I can't guarantee that they look perfect in outdated browsers, because they are not tested in them.

I would like to work with you on a custom design. Where do we start and how much is it?

Custom website design from Lavender Moon varies in price from usually R 3000 - R 6000 at this time depending on the complexity of the project.
Pricing breaks down as follows...

  • Custom website template for your business which includes up to 5 revisions of the first proof.
  • I will load the following pages and products on your website, hosted by your webhost who must support CMS - Content Management System:
    • Intro page - if applicable
    • Opening page (home) with product entry supplied by you (ie the content)
    • Contact page with a form which customers can submit online to your email
    • An empty style sheet for each additional page you require. You will then load and update your content by logging into your control panel as and when needed. (If you don't want to maintain your website yourself, we can do it for you at a very reasonable price! Click here for our pricelist.)
    • Favicon (That little picture before your domain name in the address bar)
    • XML and HTML Sitemaps

Sites with complicated and numerous designs as well as sites with more involved flash animation can be more than what is quoted above, because of the extra work involved.

Custom site design includes a website design created for your business by Lavender Moon Design according to your specifications. Once the site design is approved by you, you have 15 days after that to ask for additional changes to the design. After that time period, my hourly rate of R 250 ph will apply to any changes made to the site design.

An initial payment of R 2000 is required up front before I will begin a custom project and any remaining fees will be due before your site design is installed.

I do ask that when explaining what you are looking for in a site design that you send me as many ideas as you can.....colours, themes, images, fonts, etc. Links to other sites that you like is also something that will help. Obviously I can't duplicate another site design, but it will help give me an idea of what sort of "feel" you're going for.

I added a bit of code to my template, and now the whole thing is screwed up! HELP!

Relax. The whole thing is not screwed up. More than likely what happened is that you added your bit of code to the code that you see in the box on the 'Template' page of your site administration area. That isn't actually the code for the template that is used on your site. You will see a drop-down box at the top of that template page, find the name of your template in that list and click Update. More than likely, that will fix your issue. If not, please feel free to contact me and I'll gladly help to get you back on-line!

The photos on my website are appearing HUGE! What's wrong with my template?

Nothing is wrong with your template, the problem is with your photos. They look huge because the ARE huge. Most photos taken with a digital camera need to be resized smaller before they should be uploaded to your website. 600 pixels wide is a good standard size. You may want to check your camera, however. Some have a setting that will take photos specially sized for web use.

Of all your compatible hosts, which one do you recommend most?

I wouldn't recommend a host if I didn't have faith in them. However, the host that I recommend the most is www.afrihost.com based on my experience with their customer service.

I already have a logo, can you add it to one of your designs?

No problem whatsoever. I'll just need you to send me the logo, and I can replace the text that would normally display your business name with the logo.

Can you give me a price quote for a custom design?

I don't generally do price quotes for custom work as I have a pricing schedule set up. For more information about custom design CLICK HERE

I don't like the font featured in the design, can you change it?

Yes. The font used in the design can be changed, not a problem at all. However, if you are referring to the font used for the category links, page links, and the content (such as product description) on the website, it can be changed, but only to a web safe font.

How important is social networking? VERY!

Social networking is something that you need to really considering involving yourself in if you want to have a successful web business. By doing so you will be making new business contacts, marketing your business, and possibly even making a few new friends along the way.

One place to start is to start a blog. There are several blog platforms that are available such as blogger (free), tumblr (free), Wordpress (free if you have a web host), and Typepad (micro version is free...pro is not). If you know nothing about blogging, ask Google about it and you'll get a good idea of what it's all about. If you'd rather sit down with something tangible, you might want to check out the book Blogging for Bliss.

It's important that you have a link back to your website on your blog otherwise people won't be able to find your site through your blog. Something else to remember is that you're not going to get many viewers to your blog if you don't go out and view other people's blogs. Visit them, comment on the posts, and chances are they'll get curious and come visit you as well.

Just one thing....don't spam your products/services on other people's blogs. It's kinda rude.

Other social networking sites include Facebook and Twitter. There are many others out there, but these are the most well known.

Text on your website

You need text on your website. Good, descriptive text, but not sparse text such as "Welcome to my website", or unnecessary text such as "My pets names are Lady, Choppie, Jack, Snoekie, Gigi, Chipee and Chipoo "

You need to adequately describe your business and what is available on your website. Especially on your homepage! People need to know what your site is about ASAP. There's a fine line between not enough, just right, and waaay too much. Viewers don't want to see a page covered in text...booooring. But while a page full of pictures might be more visually pleasing, search engines like text better.

Companies offering SEO

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. There are a LOT of companies out there that offer this service. Many of them are scams, so BE CAREFUL!

Can I purchase the design now and have it installed at a later date?

Absolutely. After a design is purchased, I can hold it for as long as you need. When you are ready to have the design installed, just forward me the login information for your host.

I would like to order business cards to match my design, can I do that?

Sure, designing your business cards as well as other matching print items are available. Just ask...
